About
BAKER'S DOZEN FILMS
Baker's Dozen Films was founded by David Siev. David Siev is a Cambodian-Mexican American filmmaker. His passion for storytelling, inspired by his father's escape from the Khmer Rouge, began with his debut award-winning narrative short "Year Zero." Raised in rural Bad Axe, Michigan, David documented his family's struggles during the pandemic, leading to his acclaimed SXSW-winning debut documentary feature "Bad Axe." The film touched hearts with its poignant and personal approach to themes of racism, political division, and generational trauma. Through his success with "Bad Axe," David broke barriers as the first Cambodian-American to ever win a Critic's Choice Award. He was also the first Cambodian-American to receive a Cinema Eye Nomination and make the shortlist for the Academy Awards. Beyond filmmaking, David is a prominent advocate in the AAPI communities. He engages with policymakers, speaks on the power of storytelling at universities nationwide, and continues to amplify marginalized voices while preserving important cultural narratives through his work.
